Manga Giveaway: Rurouni Kenshin Contest

Once again the end of the month nears and once again I have some manga to give away. Enter this month’s contest for a chance to win a new copy of the first Rurouni Kenshin omnibus, equivalent to the first three volumes of the series, as published by Viz Media. As always, the giveaway is open world-wide!

I love samurai manga—from the fantastic Blade of the Immortal, to the melancholy House of Five Leaves, the historical epic Vagabond, the brutally passionate Satsuma Gishiden, and even the crazy insanity of Gin Tama…my list could keep going for a while, but I’ll stop there. There is an immense variety of samurai manga and stories can be found for just about every demographic. I’m interested in learning about what other samurai manga people are reading which is why this giveaway features Rurouni Kenshin, a rather popular and well received samurai series.

So, you may be wondering, how can you win the first Rurouni Kenshin omnibus?

1) In the comments below, tell me a little about your favorite samurai manga.
2) In addition to your favorite, simply mention a samurai manga that hasn’t been mentioned yet by me or by someone else.
3) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

One person may earn up to three entries for this giveaway. You only have one week to get your comments in. If you have any trouble leaving comments, feel free to e-mail me your entry at phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com and I’ll make sure they get posted. The winner will be randomly selected and announced on July 6, 2011.

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address, link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. I unfortunately haven’t read the manga, but the anime Samurai Champloo is one of my favorite series. It’s unique style sets it apart from, well, nearly everything.
Unfortunately I haven’t read many samurai oriented manga. House of Five Leaves comes immediately to mind, of course, and I adore it. Ono’s sketchy style is so fitting for the languid and stoic characters in the series.
I feel like any conversation about samurai manga would be incomplete without mention of the brilliant Lone Wolf and Cub.

  2. I have a two-fer with Samurai Deeper Kyo, both one of my favorites and one that has not been mentioned so far. After I finished Rurouni Kenshin, certainly a favorite, I went looking for more samurai-oriented manga and stumbled across this series. Although in all honesty it has its flaws, I quickly became fond of the characters; I found the art, plot, humor, drama, and action enjoyable. All in all, solid entertainment.

To be on the safe side, another samurai manga not mentioned is Kaze Hikaru.

Thank you for the heads-up on some good series.

  3. Maybe it’s because it’s the one I’ve read most recently but House of Five Leaves is probably my favourite samurai manga. It’s refreshing to read a samurai story that’s not about macho posturing and improbable swordfights, not that there’s necessarily anything wrong with those.

Something not mentioned: Samurai 7 is an anime series based on the classic Kurosawa film Seven Samurai. It has impossibly cool samurai, poor villagers and huge mecha. There’s also a manga version and Del Rey published two volumes of it in English. Sadly, the anime was much better.

  4. I don’t have a favorite samurai manga, although I do love Samurai Champloo (anime). I have heard good things about Peacemaker Kurogane, but I have never read it.

I’d love to read House of Five Leaves sometime too. I have hard nothing but good things about it and the anime was lovely.

  5. My favorite Samurai Manga is Vagabond by Tahehiko Inoue. It details the life of Miyamoto Musashi during the the Warring States period of Japan. The story is told with real humanity and the art has a realistic feel which captures the action and emotions of the characters perfectly!

The first Samurai manga I’d ever read was Usagi Yojimbo, which for all cuteness of the characters, took itself seriously and borrorwed much from the tales of Musashi.

I guess my favorite would have to be Gin Tama and im currently watching the anime. xD For mentioning a samurai manga i would have to choose Dororo by Osamu TEZUKA. It has 4 volumes and completed. I have yet to read it, but i plan to soon.
