Manga Giveaway: Happy Hallowe’en! (Sugar Sugar Rune Giveaway)

Did October seem to go by really quickly for anyone else? Well, the end of the month is here which means it’s time for another manga giveaway! This month I’ve got a new copy of Sugar Sugar Rune, Volume 1 by Moyoco Anno as published by Del Rey Manga up for grabs. As always, the contest is open world-wide, so I hope you’ll take the opportunity to enter and win some free manga!

In addition to a manga giveaway, the end of October brings with it Hallowe’en! Sugar Sugar Rune is a wonderful fantasy series that brings the holiday to mind for me as it is celebrated in the United States. It’s got witches, magic, and chocolate after all! For this giveaway, I’m interested in learning what other manga reminds people of Hallowe’en or gets them in the mood for the holiday. Is it something sweeter like Sugar Sugar Rune, something creepy like Mushishi, something bloody and intense like Berserk, or something that utterly terrifies you? Don’t forget, the Horror Manga Moveable Feast is currently going on this week in case you need any ideas or inspiration!

So, you may be wondering, how can you win Sugar Sugar Rune, Volume 1?

1) In the comments below, tell me which manga gets you in the Hallowe’en spirit.
2) To earn a second entry, tell me why that manga gets you in the mood for Hallowe’en.
3) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

You are able to earn up to three entries for this giveaway. As usual, you have one week to get your comments in. If you have any trouble leaving comments, or if you would prefer, you can e-mail your entry to me at phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com and I will post it. The winner will be randomly selected and announced on November 2, 2011. Best of luck, and Happy Hallowe’en!

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address, link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. What manga gets me in the halloween spirit?
Weirdly, Shaman King. I don’t know if it’s because of that trio of halloween themed girls, with the pumpkin, the ghost and the posessed doll, or just the whole ghostly nature of the whole series, but it just makes me want to get all spooky up in this house.

  2. Actually several manga, for example Rosario+Vampire (though mostly the first few volumes, I didn’t like the story anymore after that so I stopped reading), Inuyasha (with all the demons), but mostly Vampire Princess Miyu and the spin-off series Vampire Princess Yui and The Wanderer. The reason that Vampire Miyu is at the top, is that it’s about vampires and the stories are scary and/or mysterious, in my opinion. The Miyu stories have a bit of a “haunting atmosphere” (but maybe the novels have that more than the comics, some stories in the novels I thought were scarier than all the stories in the comics). Vampire Yui is a bit less scary, but The Wanderer (which is a spin-off from Yui actually) is more Halloween-like, because those stories are scarier (very mysterious).

The manga that gets me in the mood for Halloween would have to be, Wallflower AKA Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge by Tomoko Hayakawa. I love this manga soooooo much! Why does it get you into the Halloween mood? Beacuase there are multiple chapters that are Halloween related, as well as a “darkness lover” main character, Sunako. That is her favorite holiday, and she loves all things scary/dark. The other main characters are four guys and they do cosplay “some schemes” to make her become a beautiful lady. This is my all time favorite.

Happy Halloween~! Hope yours is wonderful and full of “hauntings” and “spooky awesomeness” xD

  4. What reminds me of Halloween? Demonbane. See, at my anime club Halloween would be a special night of anime so bad it’s scary. I still can’t read the Demonbane manga without remembering the ill-fated decision that we should never take impromptu votes on what to watch the next semester while on immense sugar rushes. Plus it’s like a modern Lovecraft, assuming “modern” means “based on a loli, h-game.”

  5. Franken Fran really reminds me of Halloween. Why? It’s so obvious, the main character Fran is even a Frankenstein monster herself! Her surgeries almost always end gruesomely, which makes me think of all the mischief and generally apathy that Halloween monsters seem to possess. It’s really funny though, like Halloween is in the long run. No matter how scary it gets there’s a good laugh to be had.
