Manga Giveaway: Genkaku Picasso Giveaway

It’s nearing the end of the month, so it’s time for another manga giveaway! In honor of the Usamaru Furuya Manga Moveable Feast, which is being hosted right here at Experiments in Manga, I’ll be giving away a new copy of Furuya’s Genkaku Picasso, Volume 1 as published by Viz Media. As always, the contest is open world-wide, so please enter!

I first learned about Usamaru Furuya when I saw a cover preview for Lychee Light Club. I had never heard of Furuya before, and I had certainly never heard of Lychee Light Club, but I adored that cover (and still do). For some reason (and I’m not sure that anybody else actually is aware of this), I volunteered to host the Usamaru Furuya Manga Moveable Feast before I had even read a single thing by him. Since then, I’ve devoured Lychee Light Club as well as everything else of his that is currently available in English. It’s been a lot of fun and a very satisfying experience to research and completely immerse myself in Furuya and his work. I’d love to see more of his manga translated into English.

So, you may be wondering, how can you win Genkaku Picasso, Volume 1?

1) In the comments below, tell me about how you were introduced to Usamaru Furuya or his work.
2) For a second entry tell me which, if any, of Furuya’s manga you have read and if you have a personal favorite. (If you haven’t read any, you can just mention that.)
3) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

Each person can earn up to three entries for this giveaway. As usual, you have one week to get your comments in. If you have any trouble leaving comments, or if you would prefer, you can e-mail your entry to me at phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com and I will post it. The winner will be randomly selected and announced on February 1, 2012.

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address, link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. I haven’t read any of his work, but I’ve heard of Genkaku Picasso and would like to try it.

  2. My intro to Furuya was pretty lucky. I was a silly middle school anime nerd, and one day my mom brought me a manga she found in a dollar bin “I know you like those animes” It was Short Cuts vol. 1 and it changed the way I look at comics forever. I’ve since scoured the internet and book stores for everything he’s ever done, including some rare interviews and weird bits. I was even planning a rip to Canada to see him at a con, but unfortunately my friend/ride didn’t have her passport. Breaks my heart, I hope I get to meet him someday because I’m a huge fan of his disciplined fine artist meets hilarious gag strip style.

  3. 1) I was introduced to Usamaru Furuya through an impulse buy of Short Cuts volumes one and two during an online sale. Needless to say, I found them absolutely hilarious.

    2) I haven’t had the opportunity to read many of Furuya’s other works (my local library is sadly lacking). I have read all of Short Cuts and his contribution to Secret Comics Japan. Hopefully I can take a whack at his other series soon!

    3) my email is isaacdhale@gmail.com. I tweeted about this contest on my Twitter page! (@IsaacHale)

  4. 1. Seen lots of praise for Palepoli online and was intrigued.

    2. Read Palepoli, Garden, Short Cuts, Music of Marie and Lychee Light Club. I’ve got first 2 volumes of No Longer Human, but I’ll wait for the third and read the whole thing together.
My absolute favourite is Music of Marie, but his work varies a lot and each book or series is great in its own right.

  5. 1. I think I was introduced to him in Manga: Masters of the Art (a really good book that features legends like CLAMP and Takehiko Inoue) and thought his art style was really visually interesting! The pictures of his 4-koma Shortcuts looked hilarious~

    2. I haven’t read anything by him yet, but I’ll try to pick up one of his books at Barnes & Noble soon!

  6. 1. I have never read anything by him but hope to still enter.

  7. 1.) I don’t remember what got me started, was it reading Music of Marie, reading the post on comics212 or samehat blog or was it when Vertical licensed Lychee Light Club…
2.) Favourite work? I don’t know honestly, so far I’ve enjoyed most of them, I guess Music of Marie comes out on top or one of the short story collections Happiness or Garden. Waiting for the last volume of No Longer Human before reading it.

  8. 1)Short Cuts was how I was introduced. Lol.

    2) My favorite is Short Cuts.

  9. Genkaku Picasso looked interesting on the shelf, but I never got around to reading. So the first Furuya I read was No Longer Human vol. 1, which was a bit mind-scrambling! I am going to wait until I get the next two volumes of that before I pick it up again. But No Longer Human isn’t his story, really, so I wonder how scrambling his other works are. (Hopefully I successfully linked my twitter to this post!)
