Manga Giveaway: Sherlock Bones Giveaway

The end of October is fast approaching, which means it’s time for another manga giveaway at Experiments in Manga! I’m not entirely sure why, but my review of the first volume of Yuma Ando and Yuki Sato’s manga series Sherlock Bones is by far one of the most frequently visited posts at Experiments in Manga. It’s been more than a year since Kodansha Comics published the volume in English, but the review still gets plenty of page hits. And so, for this month’s giveaway, I decided that I would give people the chance to read the actual manga. As always, the giveaway is open worldwide!

Sherlock Bones, Volume 1

I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed Sherlock Bones. The premise is inherently silly—Sherlock Holmes reincarnated as a puppy—but perhaps in part because of that, the series can be a lot of fun. Sherdog is tremendously smart, despite occasionally being distracted by his more canine tendencies, and he’s cute, too. But probably most important for a detective and mystery series like Sherlock Bones, the crimes and how they are solved are consistently interesting. Additionally, readers who want to have a more interactive reading experience can actually search for and find the clues needed to solve the crimes within the pages of the manga.

So, you may be wondering, how can you win a copy of Sherlock Bones, Volume 1?

1) In the comments below, tell me a little about your favorite or the most unusual detective/crime-solver that you’ve encountered reading manga. (If you don’t have one, simply mention that.)
2) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting, or retweeting, about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

There it is! Each person can earn up to two entries and has one week to submit comments for this giveaway. If preferred, entries can also be sent via e-mail to phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com. Your comments will then be posted in your name. The giveaway winner will be randomly selected and announced on November 5, 2014. Best of luck!

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address in the comment form, a link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. I do like Leon Orcot from Petshop of Horrors. He starts as investigating Count D and all the crazy animals that come from his shop and tend to kill people, and no matter how totally right he is, he just can’t accept anything supernatural so he somehow ends up sharing cakes and having fun with Count D instead. Perhaps not the best detective, but he’s fun.

  2. 1) … I will start with the extremely obvious: Phoenix Wright manga adaptation! It created brand new mysteries to run thru instead of just rehashing a murder from any of the games, and it was ridiculously fun 5 volumes

Another very nice read is “Young Miss Holmes” … drawn very vintage shoujo style with big sparkly eyes and all
That particular series stars a very young niece of the famous Holmes. Reads like the tag-along version to Sherlock cannon. Christie is smart and ‘spunky’ and can solve things as well as her uncle, but she isn’t a full-on Mary Sue that gets in the way of his case-solving. She gets to have her own lil adventure added into the famous stories

  3. I’ve always loved the Sherlock Holmes arc of Black Butler. The series always has some elements of a detective story, but this arc is entirely themed as a murder mystery. It even has Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as a main character. It’s not as much fun rereading it as it was reading it the first time since you know the story behind everything, but I still find little details to pick out every time I do reread it!

  4. I would mention Black Butler, and then just noticed it was mentioned above heheh

I don’t remember other detective stories in manga I might have read (poor memory is poor…), but I’d love to win this one, sounds really great! SH as a puppy? ME NEEDZ IT! I hope I am lucky to win xD

Thanks so much for the giveaway and this chance to win :3

  5. My favorite and unusual detective/crime-solver goes all the way back to Clamp School Detectives with Nokoro, Suoh, and Akira. The manga always provides a nice break from the often heavy and emotional manga that’s become more popular today. While their cases may not be as dangerous or serious as others in the detective genre, as elementary student, they take on cases that help damsels in distress. Being from rich and prestigious families, they have the power and money to come up with outrageous solutions to the cases presented to them. It’s also interesting that while Akira is a detective with his friends, he doubles as the elusive thief 20 Masks. Overall, I can always rely on these young detectives to solve their cases in the most fascinating and unrealistic ways.

  6. I don’t know if this counts but Mirai Nikki (Future Diary) might be the one for me. It was really special when I read it. I don’t want to spoil it, but no character is really normal in it. We even got an unconventional detective added to the mix. Those who are looking for shock value should read Mirai Nikki. I think the manga was better than the anime.

Of course death note has to be one of the top crime solving manga out there. =p
