Manga Giveaway: WataMote Giveaway

It may be the last day of December, but there’s still time for one more manga giveaway before the year is through. For this month’s giveaway, participants will have the opportunity to win the first volume of Nico Tanigawa’s manga series No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular! as published by Yen Press. (From here on out, I’m just going to refer to it by its Japanese abbreviation WataMote). As always, the giveaway is open worldwide!

No Matter How I Look at It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular!, Volume 1

I enjoy reading manga about otaku. It’s a term that has a slightly different meaning in English than it does in Japanese, but generally speaking otaku refers to someone with an extreme or obsessive interest in something.  Often this is assumed to be an interest in anime or manga, but it can really be a specific interest in anything. I myself could probably be considered an otaku, which is probably one of the reasons I like otaku manga—it’s easy for me to identify with many of the characters and the things they enjoy. Some otaku manga though, like Watamote, do occasionally make for uncomfortable reads. Watamote can be hilarious, but it can also be a bit painful since Tomoko is so incredibly and terribly awkward. I do like her, though, and find her endearing in her odd sort of way.

So, you may be wondering, how can you win the first volume of WataMote?

1) In the comments below, tell me a little about your favorite otaku manga or favorite otaku from manga. (If you don’t have one, you can just mention that.)
2) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting, or retweeting, about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

There it is! Each person can earn up to two entries for this giveaway and has one week to submit them. If you have trouble leaving comments, or if you would prefer, entries can be sent directly to me by e-mail using the address phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com. The comments will then be posted here in your name. The giveaway winner will be randomly selected and announced on January 7, 2015. Happy New Year, everyone!

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address in the comment form, a link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. I’ve been reading (and enjoying!) Genshiken.

  2. That has to be Yamazaki from Welcome to the NHK. He is a Pururin-fan and creator of Ero-Games, what more do you want? xD

  3. This is cheating a little since it was originally a blog-turned-book that later became a manga, but I love the main character in Fujoshi Kanojo aka My Girlfriend is a Geek! … Mainly because it’s the first time I remember reading about a fujoshi in manga, rather than a typical male otaku.
Oh, but Mikorin from Nozaki-kun is brilliant! Now that I’m thinking about it, there are so many…

  4. When i think of otaku in manga the first thing that comes to mind is a little old school (probably because I never really got into Genshiken or other manga about otaku culture): Oh My Goddess. In the second chapter of the first volume, Keiichi and Belldandy and are looking for a place to crash for the night and they stop by their friend Sada’s apartment. Sada is a hysterical caricature of an otaku who doesn’t recognize humans as being real people or in any relevant and can only connect with two dimensional animated characters. His most sacred possession is his Laserdisc Player. xD

  5. 1) The first thing that always comes to my mind when talking of “otaku” anime is Otaku no Video, but that might be because I’m an older nerd, lol.
    2) RTed your tweet about it! @bunnycartoon. ;D

  6. How about the entire cast of Flower of Life? In the second volume, they find out this one girl has been making her own manga in her notebooks. The Jerk spreads it all around the school and soon, everyone is a fan. And the girl herself is also an otaku and omfg, she makes a reference to my very favorite manga ever, Banana Fish! But it’s part of why this is the best high school manga ever.
But I don’t need Watamote, so don’t enter me for it. But I do need to tell everyone how awesome Flower of Life is.

The majority of otaku characters that stuck in my mind and became my fave are the fujoshi ones…because they are me and i am them:’). For example, this year i had pleasure to meet Tama from Barakamon who instantly became one of my absolutely favourite characters ever. And when it comes to manga as a whole,i am currently enjoying shoujo manga by Junko “Watashi ga Motete Dousunda” (dubbed as “Kiss Him, Not Me” on crunchyroll manga). Initially,i was sobbing over how Junko is wasting her time on shoujo when she could be drawing some nice BL she is so good at (:D),but i ended up being fan of this as well. Because yes, fujoshi girls are easy to relate to. Therefore i like Mousou Shoujo Otaku-kei (aka “Fujoshi Rumi”) and Fujoshi Kanojo a lot as well^^.

  8. My favorite otaku manga will have to be Genshiken. I love reading about the process behind doujinshi and the characters are hilarious and wonderful. Plus, my college anime club was named after Genshiken so there’s another layer of nostalgia there.

  10. I… is it too late to join the herd of people screaming “GENSHIKEN!!!!” and the gettin-bigger-by-the-day group yelling “Nozaki-kun!!!”
Also very much Jellyfish Princess manga for having a rare (well, that seen.. perhaps need to read more series) ahem… for having a rare FEMALE otaku that isn’t outright negative fujoushi “point and laugh at them” caricature , instead they have really varied interests! From historical periods to trains to gelatinous marine life….

  11. 1. My favorite Otaku Manga and Character is definitely Yamazaki from Welcome to the NHK! Really awesome and enjoyable series. Got tons of laughs when reading and even watching the anime~ though too bad the manga is already out of print and quite rare to find since tokyo pop went down. I hope a different publishing company.. reprint the manga again. anyway, there’s also Oreimo and Watashi Ga Motete Dousunda as well. good series ^^

  12. My favorite otaku manga happens to be WataMote. Tomoko is a character I connect to strongly so reading about her trails and tribulations is very interesting and heart wrenching.

  13. *ahem* if I may just get excited here…

    AHHH!
It has to be Yamazaki from Welcome to the Nhk! I just remember reading the manga and i got super excited when they announced an anime series was to be released (loved that too!) It’s a shame i was only able to get volume 1 of the manga in print, as they stopped printing.

My favorite otaku character/series is Yamazaki from Welcome to the NHK! This was such a fun and engrossing manga, and Yamazaki was an interesting character to read about. I posted a tweet about the giveaway as @Bamboopanda27.

  16. Denpa Kyoushi … that otaku teacher is just pure win :D

  17. Some of my favorite otaku characters/manga would have to be most of the characters in Gintama are like mini otakus of shonen jump mangas like DBZ which is why I love Gintama! XD Also more otaku characters that are my fav are Mint Blancmanche with her secret adoration of wearing large animal costumes, and Renge Houshakujji with her infatuation with an anime dating game character. There are more but these were the first three that came to my mind first! :)

  18. Kathryn Tate says
