Manga Giveaway: Ema Toyama Twosome

June is almost here, and May is almost through, so it’s once again time to hold a manga giveaway at Experiments in Manga! This month you will all have the opportunity to win not one, but two manga created by Ema Toyama and released in English by Kodansha Comics: Manga Dogs, Volume 1 and Missions of Love, Volume 1. As always, the giveaway is open worldwide!

Manga Dogs, Volume 1Missions of Love, Volume 1

So far, mangaka Ema Toyama has had three of her original series released in English: I Am Here!, Manga Dogs, and Missions of Love. She was also one of several contributors involved with Shugo Chara Chan!. My introduction to Toyama’s work was through Missions of Love (which I find to be incredibly addictive with all of its over-the-top melodrama and twisted relationships). The only other manga of hers that I’ve read is the three-volume series Manga Dogs. The two series are very different from each other, but I find it interesting that they both feature young women as protagonists who are creative types. In the case of Missions of Love, Yukina Himuro is a cell phone novelist while in Manga Dogs, Kanna Tezuka is a shoujo mangaka. Though both Yukina and Kanna have other things to deal with in their lives, at least part of each manga series deals with their careers as professional storytellers.

So, you may be wondering, how can you win two volumes of Ema Toyama’s manga?

1) In the comments below, tell me a little about your favorite character in a manga who is an author, novelist, or some other type of writer. (If you’ve never come across one in your reading, simply mention that.)
2) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting, or retweeting, about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

It’s as easy as that! Each person participating in the giveaway can earn up to two entries and has one week to submit comments. If you prefer, or have trouble leaving comments, entries can also be sent via email to phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com. I will then post the entry here in your name. The giveaway winner will be randomly selected and announced on June 3, 2015.

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address in the comment form, a link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. I am going to totally totally cheat and say Y-Naga from Not Love But Delicious Foods Make Me So Happy. This character is clearly a stand-in for Fumi Yoshinaga herself, and even though this particular manga is about food, not manga, she herself is easily my favorite manga artist in real life. Who also happens to be a foodie.

I really like the BL manga Junjou Romantica due to the anime. Of course, it’s cheesy and unrealistic, but at the same time, I just find it really romantic haha. So I’ll say Usagi as he’s a novelist and I find his quirkiness really endearing *blushes* XD

  3. Michelle says

Shigure Sohma! He’s such a funny character and he’s a novelist! He’s the best

  4. Haley Scully says

    1. My favorite writer is Sato from Welcome to the NHK! Throughout the series, he works on writing the script for an erotic video game, and his journey to accomplish this is one of the funniest and most memorable things I’ve ever seen.
    2. I posted a tweet about the giveaway as @Bamboopanda27

  5. 1) I feel like goin oldskool… err.. 90s is already that, isn’t it?

Mama, aka Misako Kurata from Kodocha!!
The woman had crazy headwear, is a divorcee, adopted the main chara Sana-chan and was just amazing (if slightly nuts for comedy effects) parent

I haven’t really come across a character of that kind.

  10. Jennifer says

I don’t think I really have some true favorite writer-type manga character so I will pick
Nozaki, from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, is the mangaka. I am not sure about about my liking him but he make fun things appear around him, so I really appreciate him for this.

  11. Jennifer says

Or is Lucy from Fairy Tail ok ? After all she is someone that wants to write a novel, and she even have written many pages. Not sure she can be considered as a writer or only when she has finishes one novel or when she manages to be edited or when she sells one book.

  12. 1. Who first come to mind are the mangaka team from Bakuman: Mashiro and Takagi. Loved how the characters developed from amateurs to a professional team.

Side note: I was going to mention Usagi-san from Junjou Romantica, but he was listed a few times already. xD

  13. 1. Well… What about Yuki from Gravitation? I wanted to mention Usagi, but apparently…. One of my favourite manga characters is not as popular as I thought. :D…. Gravitation is kinda old – and lots of people might be weirded out by older art style… But it’s definitely worth it.

  14. Sabrina Joy says

    1. My favorite is Akihiko Usami from Junjou Romantica. He’s really eccentric with weird tastes but that’s what makes him so great! And he’s childish and funny, and that also makes him really lovable.

Since someone already mentioned Mashiro and Takagi from Bakuman, I’ll say Juta Tachibana from Otomen. I love him secretly being the author of a shojo manga based on Asuka!
