Manga Giveaway: Kodansha Shoujo Smorgasbord

The end of November is almost here, and you know what that means! It’s time for another manga giveaway at Experiments in Manga. As is tradition for November’s giveaway, in celebration of Thanksgiving in the United States (my favorite holiday) I’m offering up a manga feast. You all will have a chance to win not one, but four volumes of manga this month: LDK, Volume 1 by Ayu Watanabe; Let’s Dance a Waltz, Volume 1 by Natsumi Ando; My Little Monster, Volume 1 by Robico; and Say I Love You, Volume 1 by Kanae Hazuki–a veritable smorgasbord of shoujo from Kodansha Comics! And, as always, the giveaway is open worldwide.

LDK, Volume 1Let's Dance a Waltz, Volume 1My Little Monster, Volume 1Say I Love You, Volume 1

When I used to think of Kodansha Comics, shoujo manga never really came to mind. However, over the last couple of years, the publisher has made a point to expand its shoujo offerings. As a result, Kodansha has started to develop a nice catalog of shoujo manga, including titles that feature science fiction, mystery, action, romance, comedy, drama and more. For the most part, I’ve really been enjoying Kodansha’s shoujo series and I like seeing the variety in the manga.

So, you may be wondering, how can you win a Kodansha Shoujo Smorgasbord?

1) In the comments below, tell me a little bit about your favorite shoujo manga released by Kodansha Comics. (If you don’t have one yet, simply mention that.)
2) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting, or retweeting, about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

And there you have it! Each person can earn up to two entries for this giveaway and has one week to submit comments. If you have trouble leaving comments, or if you would prefer, entries can also be emailed to me at phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com. I will then post the comments here in your name. The giveaway winner will be randomly selected and announced on December 2, 2015. Good luck to you all!

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address in the comment form, a link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. Posted on behalf of Joseph:

My favorite shoujo manga released by Kodansha Comics is A Silent Voice. I was deeply moved by the series when I read it on Crunchyroll. I am now collecting all the individual volumes because I wanted to support the author for creating something so poignant and personally engaging.

I also retweeted your giveaway announcement. Thanks for running these contests and have a happy Thanksgiving!

      Best Wishes,

  2. I would have to say The Wallflower by Tomoko Hayakawa. It was one of my first manga series I started collecting so it has the nostalgia factor for me. The artwork is a little outdated, simple, and out of proportion, but the goofball characters and the comedic timing are gold if a little repetitive.
I am most looking forward to Princess Jellyfish being released in February. I hope it does well.

  3. fav shoujo from Kodansha? a very difficult choice between (the predictable cliche answer) Sailor Moon and Sailor V … and an unbelievably good new series A Silent Voice
A draw most likely broken in just a few months by Princess Jellyfish!!! (which is technically josei, but Kuronosuke is as shoujo as one gets)

like, I hate to be _that guy_ but I got into Silent Voice thru fan scanslations .. it was only the original one-shot “pilot” chapter, but it made me immediately put this series on the must-buy list

  4. My fave from them is Shugo Chara! It was one of my first shoujo mangas/animes, so it has a special place in my heart. I remember having such a huge crush on Ikuto LOL But the entire vibe of the series was just so light-hearted and fun. It was definitely a delight to read!

Thank you for the contest :D

  5. Seeing as how A Silent Voice ran in Shounen Magazine and therefore isn’t technically a shojo, I’ll go with No.6. I heard the anime ending was disappointing (rushed), but the manga ending is just fine. I enjoy bromances, so I was right at home here.

Yeah, I was just thinking A Silent Voice doesn’t count as shojo, but it’s such a different shounen I totally forgot about that distinction when making my pick.

This is what happens to newbies (like me) in the world of manga. They totally butcher the genres.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a very happy Thanksgiving!

      Best Wishes,
      Joseph

  6. My favorite from kodansha comics? OMG i really love a lot of their titles that were adapted from or to anime like Your lie in April, Shugo Chara, Seven Deadly Sins, and Mushishi. However, if i am just basing off of my interest in the manga then my favorite is My Little Monster. It has a really sweet plot and i just can’t get tired of it. The characters are amazing and it’s rare find in which i absolutely loved the ending even if my main ship didn’t end up together.

  7. Hi, greetings from Portugal!

I think my favourite manga from Kodansha is Sailor Moon. It was my absolute favourite anime when I was a kid and then I read the manga and fell in love with the art and even more with the story. :)

    1) I haven’t read any shoujo manga from Kodansha, but it seems like they have some great series, and I’d love to read them.
    2) I tweeted about the giveaway as @Bamboopanda27

    Thanks for the chance! :)

  9. It’s kinda borderline shoujo, but No. 6 is one of my absolute favorite manga that Kodansha has published.

  10. I’ve never read any of the mangas from Kodansha Comics actually. I’ve read tons and tons of shoujo manga, but none of the ones released by them come to think of it. I think it’d be a great opportunity to give these mangas a shot though!

  11. I have never read shoujo manga yet, but I have read a few Kodansha Comics manga before. So, I’m open to trying one out.

  12. My fave shoujo manga from Kodansha is most definitely Sailor Moon. I used to watch the anime when I was little, but I never read the original source material. I was super excited when they announced back in 2011 that they were going to release it unflipped and uncut. The best thing about the series is that it’s so serious and honest while also being light-hearted and silly. That and it’s absolutely gorgeous to look at, Takeuchi’s art really is one of a kind.

*I retweeted your tweet @supernyankat. Thanks for holding this contest!*

  13. Sailor Moon was always my old standby favorite series. I even had the Mixx singles back when those were coming out (and now have a complete set of the Kodansha releases).

Though not-quite shoujo, I’m also totally in love with Nodame (orig. Kodansha) and and Princess Jellyfish. (There’s a lot of overlap in the josei and older shoujo types of series I think.)

  14. I’ve been an almost exclusive shoujo reader for my entire manga reading life, so it almost pains me to admit that the one series I am faithfully following at the moment (which just so happens to be released by Kodansha) isn’t truly “shoujo.” “Noragami: Stray God” is technically a shounen series–but! I have not had such anxiety over whether or not a couple will get to have their “happily ever after” in years. The series is a great balance of action and exploring relationships, drama and comedy.

  15. My favorite shoujo from Kodansha is Shugo Chara.
I retweeted your giveaway announcement @Majenta_Dream . Thanks for the contest.

  16. Fav shojo manga from Kodansha Comics?! That’s a tough one… Codename: Sailor V and Sailor Moon are definitely up there on my fav list, but I’ll go with another title… L-DK. So happy that it’s finally licensed in English. I’ve read the German localized versions released by Egmont Manga and have started to add the English versions to my shelf. ;)

  17. I think the only Kodansha book I’ve read that would be considered shoujo might be Manga Dogs. It was okay but I don’t know that I’d call it a favorite. I did like some of the tidbits about how manga is created, but I found the characterizations a bit overly superficial. Entertaining enough for a few volumes.

  18. Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon will always have a special place in my heart as my first manga, but I didn’t like how Kodansha Comics handled their release of the series (translation errors, awkward dialogue, deleting the Punch comics). Both Shugo Chara! (well, originally Del Rey) and Say I Love You. both surprised me with how good they were, so I’ll say those.

Only read shonen anime but my tastes are changing

  20. I love A Silent Voice. The story is so touching and unlike many manga, actually has a deeper plot/meaning. It has made me cry several times, and makes me strive to be a better person.

(Also I retweeted this post on twitter under the ID zenpeye.)
