Kodansha usually isn’t the first publisher I think of when I think of shoujo, but I’ve really been enjoying some of the shoujo manga that it has licensed. For this giveaway, I asked that participants tell me a little about their favorite Kodansha shoujo manga. As was pointed out by several people, Kodansha also releases quite a few shounen series which have tremendous shoujo crossover appeal. Check out the the giveaway comments for all of the responses!

  1. see, in my brain Kodansha IS shoujo … altho that might be because of years of their Japanese publishing, as the most shoujo of shoujo manga was first introduced to me thru Nakayoshi in the 90s

    • Oh, definitely! The Japanese side of Kodansha has a ton of great shoujo manga. But when it comes to North American publishers, Viz Media’s Shojo Beat imprint is usually the one that first comes to my mind. I certainly appreciate Kodansha Comic’s efforts to translate more shoujo, though. And josei, too! I’m super excited to see Princess Jellyfish being released. ^_^

      • heh, my brain sees Viz Media and goes ” ‘sup Shounen Jump!” … again with the 90s and the neverending stream of Rumiko Takahashi series, then it was all about DragonBall…. Viz in my brain is all-shounen all the time!

now how to classify YenPress. hmmm, light novels and..and.. moe?

        • Hahaha! That’s true. When I think of Viz, I think of the shounen first, too. But then when I think of shoujo, I think of Shojo Beat, which brings me back to Viz. XD
