Manga Giveaway: Superhero Duo (Batmanga and Ultraman)

The end of the month once more draws near which means it’s once more time for a manga giveaway at Experiments in Manga! For this month’s giveaway you all have the chance to win not one, but two manga of the superheroic nature, a mix of the old and the new as well as the East and the West: Batmanga, Volume 1 by Jiro Kuwata from DC Comics and Ultraman, Volume 1 by Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi from Viz Media. And, as always, the giveaway is open worldwide, too!

Batmanga, Volume 1Ultraman, Volume 1

It’s a little strange: I would never really go out of my way to describe myself as a fan of superhero comics, nor is it a genre that I specifically seek out. And yet, when I do end up reading about superheroes, I often find that I enjoy myself. Over the last few years, manga featuring superheros seem to have become increasingly common in English, whether it’s a classic like Jiro Kuwata’s Batmanga inspired by American comics or a modern take on a well-established Japanese franchise like Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi’s Ultraman. Some superhero manga are fairly serious, but there have been quite a few with a comedic bent of late as well, such as One-Punch Man by One and Yusuke Murata and My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi. And I have to admit, I’ve enjoyed them all.

So, you may be wondering, how can you win a duo of superhero manga?

1) In the comments below, tell me a little about one of your favorite manga featuring superheroes and why you like it. (If you don’t have a favorite, or haven’t read any superhero manga, simply mention that.)
2) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting, or retweeting, about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

And there you have it! Everyone participating in the giveaway can earn up to two entries and has one week to submit comments. If preferred or needed, entries can also be emailed to me directly at phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com. Those comments will then be posted here in your name. The winner of the giveaway will be randomly selected and announced on May 4, 2016. Good luck to you all!

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address in the comment form, a link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. I don’t really have an unique favorite, but I greatly enjoyed the Ishinomori Kamen Rider manga back when I read it. It’s been a while and it’s still fresh in my memory so that’s my number one choice.
Surprisingly enough, the Spider Man manga was also enjoyable in its own merit. The focus was mostly on the drama of being a super hero, rather than on the heroics, but the art was nice looking and the characters carried the whole story.

  2. I spent a good chunk of my childhood (and a fair stint of my adult life!) reading American superheroes, and have gotten generally tired of the genre, so it’s not one I seek out much these days. That said, I did enjoy One-Punch Man and how it subverted/parodied a lot of genre conventions.

  3. Easily the Tiger & Bunny anime. I really can’t name many superhero manga, at least in what we in the west would define as “superhero”, but Tiger & Bunny is an easy pick for me.

I’m a huge fan of One-Punch Man. It is so action-packed and funny. Highly recommend it (and the anime).

  5. Cody Kemp says

I don’t really have a specific favorite because most manga I read in the superhero genre tend to be really good. If I had to pick I would go with My Hero Academia. I love it because all the kids have all this baggage they have to deal with before they can become real heroes. All the insecurities they suffer through are realistic and relatable. Every arc requires the students to tackle they’re issues in some surprising ways.

  6. Linda Ash Nguyen says

I really love one-punch man! It’s so hilarious given the main character is like like cluelessly innocent but smart and strong. serious looking but ridiculous. I don’t think i remember what else is considered superhero manga.

  7. I’ve never read superheroes manga, so i don’t have a favourite…

    1. One of my favorite superhero manga series is One-Punch Man. I love the mix of humor and action. Another of my favorites is Tiger & Bunny.
    2. I posted a tweet about the giveaway as @Bamboopanda27.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway! :)

  9. Ash Brown says

    Posted on behalf of Daniel:

I have not read a manga before but, they do seem interesting.

  10. I really loved the OPM anime, and now Boku no Hero, so i think i’ll check out them

  11. Yeah… One-Punch Man is so damn good I’m just going to have to be totally original, though I am a bit of a snob, so I prefer the Yusuke Murata redraw (mind you ONE is talentless).
