Manga Giveaway: The Royal Tutor Giveaway

It’s once again the final Wednesday of the month which means it’s once again time for the monthly manga giveaway here at Experiments in Manga! For this month’s giveaway, everyone participating will have a chance to win The Royal Tutor, Volume 1 by Higasa Akai as published in English by Yen Press. (The series started out as a digital-only release, so I was very happy when a print edition was announced, too.) As usual, the giveaway is open worldwide!

The Royal Tutor, Volume 1

While I have almost no interest whatsoever in the lives of contemporary royal or imperial families, I find that I actually do have a significant fondness for fictional stories, historical or otherwise, that deal with royal dynasties and their courts. Generally, what particularly captures my attention is the seemingly inevitable court intrigue–the intense relationships that develop between people and the resulting complicated, shifting web of power. Potentially, all of this drama can lead to a very serious story, but some manga like The Royal Tutor are also able to incorporate a fair amount of humor and levity into the narrative.

So, you may be wondering, how can you a copy The Royal Tutor, Volume 1?

1) In the comments below, tell me a little about one of your favorite members of royalty from a manga. (Don’t have a favorite? Simply mention that instead.)
2) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting, or retweeting, about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

That’s really all there is to it. Participants in the giveaway have one week to submit comments and can earn up to two entries. Comments can also be sent to me directly via email using the address phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com if needed or desired. I will then post those entries here in your name. The giveaway winner will be randomly selected and announced on August 2, 2017. Good luck, everyone!

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address in the comment form, a link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

If I named my fave royal character,it would be a spoiler….i am serious:’D
So I will go with my other fave…which is (was) in fact a real person,a king and that is Ludwig II…the manga is named by him and it’s by Higuri You. It made me fall for historical personality…

  2. Rose of Versailles! I mean, historically, I can certainly see how all of their subjects would hate them enough to throw a revolution and kill them (I hardly think I’m spoiling the manga here, this is history), but actually reading about them is pretty awesome.

And we also have Shuri from Basara (he is a son of the emperor), who starts off pretty brutal, but only gets more awesome as the series goes on. The Blue King is also pretty cool, but I prefer Shuri

  3. Oh where do I start? Do I go with Aya Kanno’s interpretation of Richard III from Requiem of the Rose King? Or perhaps with Princess Yona from Yona of the Dawn?

I don’t have a favorite manga royal, alas! The cover looks unusual, and I like that the book has not only humor, but also levity!

My favourite member of royalty is Yona from Akatsuki No Yona. I have read many manga about royalty but Yona stands out for me. Akatsuki No Yona is one of my favourite manga of all time and the main character Yona is one of the reasons why. Her development through out her journey make the story so much better. Her development is realistic and does not happen just over night. We see a weak sheltered princess become a killer. One of my favourite female leads.

    1. I’m not sure if this counts, but one of my favorite characters, Ferris Eris from the manga Legend of the Legendary Heroes, was part of an important and well known Sword Clan. If it doesn’t, then I’d say Sion from the same manga.
    2. I tweeted about the giveaway as @Bamboopanda27

Thanks for the awesome giveaway!! :)

My favorite royal character from a manga would have to be Ayeka from the No Need for Tenchi manga collection. I liked seeing her getting into humorous little spats with Ryoko. Though I confess that it was a close tie with her little sister Sasami, who is so sweet and lovable. For instance, I really enjoyed the part where she and Mihoshi sew up a costume for a “sea monster” to help an old lady save a beach cape from being destroyed by developers. And then there was the one where she and one of her mothers helped some monkeys find food.

At least, that’s my favorite from officially translated manga. But from reading the Touhou Project manga Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth, I’ve come to like Princess Kaguya as well. She’s so silly, lazy, and carefree at times, so it was fun watching her get into various antics like literally driving a bull into a china shop, offering to help her rabbit servants with decorating a banner for a strike they were doing against HER, and trying to nurse her mentor back to health with her own unique “boiled banana plum radish infusion” (well, it certainly had a “bang” to it).

Sadly, I don’t have one, but I’m open to something new.

  11. I’m not sure if she’s my favorite, but the obscure/forgotten manga monarch who comes to mind the quickest is Iono-Ojou from Iono-sama Fanatics by Fujieda Miyabi. Published in English by Infinity Studios in 2007, I was lucky enough to find a copy at Borders. ;)

  12. It’ll never be available in English, but I also highly recommend noted mangaka Yamagishi Ryouko’s Hatshepsut. It’s breathtaking and engrossing!

Recently, I started to read Joou no Hana.
I think I like Aki’s character, won’t say she’s my favorite tho but she’s one of the few members of royalty I remember.
