Manga Giveaway: UQ Holder! Giveaway

Despite being the shortest month of the year, for me February always seems to stretch on forever. With that in mind, I thought it oddly appropriate to offer for this month’s giveaway a manga that features immortals. Specifically, this month you will all have the chance to enter for a chance to win the first volume of Ken Akamatsu’s most recent series UQ Holder!, a sequel of sorts to his manga Negima!: Magister Negi Magi, as published in English by Kodansha Comics. (Don’t worry if you’ve never read Negima!, UQ Holder! can be easily read on its own.) As always, the giveaway is open worldwide!

UQ Holder!, Volume 1

At this point it’s probably not much of a secret that I enjoy manga about immortals and the consequences of immortality. Hiroaki Samura’s Blade of the Immortal was one of the very first manga that I read and it continues to be a favorite. (It was even the focus of my first monthly manga review project.) More recently, manga series like Ken Akamatsu’s UQ Holder! and Tsuina Miura and Gamon Sakurai’s Ajin: Demi-Human have caught my attention specifically because immortals are involved. Granted, there are other elements in both of those series that intrigue and appeal to me as well. When it comes to immortals, UQ Holder! is interesting in that it features a variety of characters with different types of immortality; most series I’ve read tend to stick to just one.

So, you may be wondering, how can you win a copy of UQ Holder!, Volume 1?

1) In the comments below, tell me a little about your favorite immortal from a manga. (Never encountered an immortal in your manga reading? Simply mention that instead.)
2) For a second entry, name a manga featuring immortals that hasn’t yet been mentioned by me or by someone else in the comments.
3) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting, or retweeting, about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).

It’s as easy as that. Each person is able to earn up to three entries for this giveaway and has one week to submit comments. Giveaway entries can also be emailed to be directly at phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com. (I will then post your comments here in your name.) The giveaway winner will be randomly selected and announced on March 4, 2015.

VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address in the comment form, a link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.

  1. Alucard from Hellising is immortal and one of my favourites, he is a vampire working with the Hellsing Organisation dedicated to fighting vampires and otehr dangerous supernatural creatures.

Another immortal is (possibly) Vash the Stampede from Trigun – he is a non-human plant based being so is possibly immortal or at the every least difficult to kill

  2. Ban from The Seven Deadly Sins is pretty cool because of his backstory and his badassness. Sadly, he is the ONLY good character in Seven Deadly Sins… :P

  3. Yuta from Mermaid Saga, I’ve always thought Rumiko Takahashi was a severely underrated Horror Mangaka (despite being an assistant to Kazuo Umezu at one point and Laughing Target being a great story) and Mermaid Saga has Yuta as a likeable but world weary lead which plays off of the body horror monsters that are the lost souls.

  4. 1) Celty from Durarara!! is a dullahan, a headless horse(wo)man, and therefore immortal despite losing her head… She’s very sweet and human despite not actually being human.

    2) Another series that features immortals as a major plot point is Baccano… which I’d really like to see licensed as a light novel one day… (Not sure if it’s a manga actually. If this doesn’t count, then I name Wish which features essentially immortal angels if I’m remembering correctly. I suppose they could be killed by each other, but from human perspective they’re basically immortal)

  5. 1) My fave immortal would be Tomoe from Kamisama Kiss hands down! I love this fox so much <3
    2) Another manga that features immortals is Vampire Knight, I'm surprised that no one's mentioned that yet! At the same time though, I'm still not over being bitter about that ending in the manga… what a huge letdown and complete o_o

    1. My favorite immortal characters are Maria and Issac from Baccano. They’re really fun, unique, and interesting characters, and although they don’t always make the best decisions, both of them are kind hearted and have good intentions. They are very caring and humane characters, even though they are immortal.
    2. Another series with several immortal characters is Black Butler. There are characters who are demons, reapers, and angels, and they all have an important part in the story.
    3. I tweeted about the post as @Bamboopanda27.

  7. 1) Some of my favorite immortals? I am a fan of Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who if that can count. The Doctor himself kind of is too (though he gets a new actor when he dies). I guess if I were to go the more manga direction, the king and queens (and chosen others) become “sennin” in Twelve Kingdoms, which makes them immortal. The king/queen can really only die by doing a bad job, leading to the awesome Shoryu, who has been a successful king for at least 500 years, in part because he’s just a damn cool guy.
    2) Not yet mentioned: Masato Yamanobe from Phoenix’s Future chapter. Yes, perhaps the Phoniex itself should count more, but he rarely shows up while we see Masato struggle with suddenly becoming immortal and the toll it has on him.

    Shiro from deadman wonderland
    C.C from code Geass
I like these to because I like it when it’s a girl that is immortal and shirk personality is my favorite but that doesn’t mean I don’t like C.C personality..there both great characters.
