Happy belated Thanksgiving, and happy end of November! Which means, yes, yet another manga giveaway here at Experiments in Manga! Keeping with tradition (if you can call it happening once before a tradition), November’s giveaway will be a batch of manga. Enter for a chance to win not one, not two, but three volumes of Hideaki Sorachi’s hilarious Gin Tama. As always, the contest is open world-wide!
Comedic manga can be a tough sell since individual readers, and manga, each have their own sense of humor. What is funny for one person is not necessarily funny for another. Finding the perfect match can sometimes be difficult. Among other sorts of humor, I tend to particularly enjoy the absolutely absurd and ridiculous which makes Gin Tama a good fit for me. I mean, it’s got samurai and space aliens, not to mention all of the pop culture parodies and historical references. The series makes me incredibly happy, which is sometimes just what you need when reading manga. So for this giveaway, I’d like to share a bit of Gin Tama love and learn about what sorts of manga make other people laugh.
So, you may be wondering, how can you win the first three volumes of Gin Tama?
1) In the comments below, tell me about your favorite comedy or parody manga.
2) For a second entry, you can simply mention a comedic manga that hasn’t been named yet by me or by someone else.
3) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).
You can earn up to three entries for this giveaway and you have one week to get your comments in. If you have trouble leaving comments, or if you would prefer, feel free to e-mail me your entries at phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com. I’ll make sure the comments are posted. The winner will be randomly selected and announced on December 7, 2011. Good luck!
VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address, link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.
Contest winner announced—Manga Giveaway: Give Me Some Gin Tama! Winner
It’s very hard to find manga funny sometimes because of different cultures and languages but I really do love SKET Dance although I’ve only read about 2 volumes. I find it really funny though.
Thanks for another great manga giveaway. Gin Tama is one of my favorite currently airing shows that makes me laugh weekly.
My favorite comedy manga is “Shonan Junai Gumi”, by Tohru Fujisawa. I watched the OVA first and couldn’t stop laughing so I moved to the manga. The story is a prequel to the well know Great Teacher Onizuka series. Those who liked GTO will certainly love this manga.
Another manga that I would like to mention, beside SJG and GTO, is “Ouran High School Host Club”, by Bisco Hatori. It’s a romantic comedy, which is one of my favorite genres. I don’t want to spoil the story, but it’s a great read for fans of comedy and shoujo.

There are soooo many funny manga (some unintentionally hilarious as well!), but I suppose the one that made me laugh the hardest would be Crayon Shin Chan by the late great Yoshito Usui. Although many gags need familiarity with Japanese culture, the Funimation dub is HILARIOUS.
However, a close second would have to be Sayonara, Zetsuobo-Sensei (Goodbye, Mr. Despair) by Kōji Kumeta. Awesome manga!

I didn’t even have to think twice about this. By far the best comedy manga I have read is Yotsuba&!. Not only do I get tons of laughs out of it, but it genuinely makes me happy to read it.

My favorite comedy manga has to be Beelzebub. It’s got a great blend of ridiculousness, and action/plot.
Also, you should be able to contact me through this account, but if not, my twitter is @BurningLizard

For my second entry I’ll have to say Ghost Sweeper Mikami. It’s an older series, and one of the first that I read where I actually liked the stand alone chapters more than the overarching plots.
I would say Sket Dance, it’s a favorite, but that one’s already been said. And Yotsuba&! People here have too much good taste.
Wait what? I have to talk about a comedic manga that’s NOT Gintama? Sorry, I just really love the series and it would be difficult to think of another comedy like that.
However, one manga that I find fairly hilarious is Hideyuki’s Doujin Work. A story about Najimi Osana and her desire to make money off of dojinshi, we see her struggles and sufferings—while along the way we meet some…eclectic characters, hear some dirty jokes, and see overall madness in the comic world!
My favorite funny manga is, hands down, Challengers! by Hinako Takanaga, a yaoi rom-com. One part cute goofy romance to two parts crazy slapstick, and a lot of fun.
It’s harder to pick a favorite manga which is exclusively a comedy; I’m torn between Kazusa Takashima’s Mad Love Chase and Sayonara, Zetsuobo-Sensei, which could not be any more different. They both have a sense of humor about 90 degrees from reality (but in orthogonal directions), and they both have great (but totally different) art. MLC kind of falls apart at the end, though, so I guess I’ll go with SZS.
It’s a bit old-school and got dragged out too much by the editors but I have to go with Ranma 1/2. It was my first manga and I still love how absurd and over-the-top it goes. Ice dancing is a full-contact sport! My email is pseudotsugam@gmail.com
Very few manga actually make me laugh out loud where others can hear me. Most of the time it comes out as a snicker or a random “Ha!”, but still the number is far and few. Yet here are a few that make me really laugh! Begin! ->
First up is really a tip of the hat to an insane, funny and talented artist. I absolutely LOVE “Kanpai” and “Gravitation” by Maki Murakami. I really wish I could read more from this artist! She has fantastic art, detailed and (in her later works) well refined, practically being used for comedic villainy! Characters are literally abused, shot, flung through the air, dropped from helicopters, dismembered, shot with bazookas and almost anything else a twisted comedic brain can come up with AND IT’S FUNNY. Nothing I’ve read from her strikes me as cruel; it’s funny. Her sense of timing and style of verbal and visual jokes are also spot on. It’s one thing to have a slapstick manga and it’s another to have both paired in hilarious harmony. Of course she has other genres mixed in like romance, drama, action, adventure so both titles are, in my humble opinion, very well rounded.
Another comedic manga that I fell in love with recently is “Your & My Secret” by Ai Morinaga and published by the zombie(?) Tokyopop. Another gender-bender-esque plot, but the beautiful art being almost abused in a comedic fashion relays makes me smile uncontrollably! Ai Morinaga’s sense of humor is just up my alley! Her other shorter-lived-in-American-print title, “Duck Price” was also on of my favorite titles.
Lastly, because all good things come in threes, the very first manga to make me really laugh was Ranma 1/2. I know it’s already been mentioned, but newer manga readers really need to find this manga and read it. I picked it up at a used bookstore outside of MSU campus and seriously could not put it down. It may have been because it was my first introduction to manga, but Ranma 1/2 just makes me crack up. The crazy attacks, the fact that the afflicted hot springs characters randomly change, the love rivals— It’s all insanely fantastic!
I probably have a twisted sense of humor to begin with so I crave humor most often lost on more “normal” individuals. So bring on the funny! >XD
My email, should you choose to accept it (haha), is: quarteni@yahoo.com and I’m on Twitter by @Quarteni.
Now I’m going to look up some of the other titles mentioned in here. I need more funny manga! XP
My favorite comedy manga is hands down “School Rumble” it’s totally random and weird just like myself.
My favorite character is Tenma bc she is an ultra ditz and she is so cute.
I did follow you on twitter and my name is @AndeeAshburyMarie
my email is dandee89@live.com
thanxx. xo.
Yakitate Japan all the way! This series has it all: fights with bread, terrible puns, and over the top parodies of other shonen titles. Sadly, the excellent anime series was never released in America, but the entire manga series is now out.
My favorite comedy manga would have to be fruits basket or wallflower! They both have everything you can think of!
