It’s that time again. Time for another manga giveaway, that is! The end of December and the end of the year seemed to sneak up on me and were nearly over before I realized it. For December, I’ll be giving away a new copy of the first volume in Naoko Takeuchi’s classic magical girl manga series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. This giveaway happens to happily coincide with the Sailor Moon Manga Moveable Feast hosted by Sean Gaffney at A Case Suitable for Treatment. (You should check out the contributions, there are some really great ones!) The contest is open world-wide, so I hope you’ll enter for a chance to win Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Volume 1!
Magical girls are one of those easily recognizable staples of Japanese pop culture. The genre has been around for quite some time and remains popular to this day. I actually haven’t read many magical girl manga. Off the top of my head I can only think of three, but I enjoyed each of them: Clamp’s Cardcaptor Sakura, Moyoco Anno’s Sugar Sugar Rune, and Naoko Takeuchi’s Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. A classic of the genre, Sailor Moon has been out of print in English for years. Fortunately, Kodansha has started publishing the revised edition of the series. This makes me particularly happy since I missed out on Sailor Moon its first time around.
So, you may be wondering, how can you win Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Volume 1?
1) In the comments below, tell me about your favorite magical girl manga. If you don’t have one, you can simply mention that.
2) To earn a second entry in the giveaway, name a magical girl manga that hasn’t been mentioned yet by me or someone else
3) If you’re on Twitter, you can earn a bonus entry by tweeting about the contest. Make sure to include a link to this post and @PhoenixTerran (that’s me).
Each entrant can earn up to three entries for this giveaway. As usual, you have one week to submit your comments. If you have trouble leaving comments, or if you would prefer, you can also e-mail me your entries at phoenixterran(at)gmail(dot)com. I’ll post the comments in your name. The winner will be announced and randomly selected on January 4, 2012. Good luck!
VERY IMPORTANT: Include some way that I can contact you. This can be an e-mail address, link to your website, Twitter username, or whatever. If I can’t figure out how to get a hold of you and you win, I’ll just draw another name.
Contest winner announced—Manga Giveaway: Magical Girl Mania Winner
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon IS my fave Magical Girl manga. ^_^ Like so many, I got hooked on the anime, and when I finally read the manga I loved it SO much more than the anime. It’s more serious, and I like the manga characterizations a lot more than the anime versions.
As for another MG series, you have to read Codename: Sailor V! It’s Takeuchi’s original take on Magical Girls and the prototype for Sailor Moon, but it stands on its own.
I do hope I win this. I already own PGSM Vol 1, but I’d give this copy to the local library. ^_^v You can find me on Twitter as @FurrySaint
Hurm I’d say Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, or whatever the title of it is, it’s basically girl is the reincarnation of Jeanne D’Arc, and goes around capturing demons.
For another one, since FurrySaint got the easy ones, I think I’ll say Wedding Peach. I didn’t read much of it, but the anime was on TV when I was younger, and I skimmed a few episodes. I’m not that big on magical girls manga and anime, really the one I mentioned and Sailor Moon are the two I was most interested in.
Anyway, you can contact me on twitter @BurningLizard or on gmail burninglizardstudios@gmail.com
I don’t have a fave magical girl manga, possibly because I haven’t read Sailor Moon yet, so I’m hoping your contest can help me remedy that!
I really loved the Searching for the Full Moon (Full Moon wo Sagashite) manga (not the anime though, I love the manga since it’s sadder and more bittersweet) which I believe counts as a magical girl series.
For another series, it’s not a manga but an anime, I’ve seen a anime blogger who I like/whose tastes I agree with rave over Heartcatch Precure so I’m planning on checking that out sometime next year (the art style looks really different as well which also has me interested).
And posted about this on twitter (handle @wanderindreamr) and you can catch me there or on my blog (and my handle here should link straight back to my blog, Narrative Investigations).
Well, to be honest, I’m not really sure what my favorite Magical Girl series is. I mean, they’re all so great! I can really connect to them on a personal level, dreaming of becoming one of them and yet living in the reality that is my own life. I may not be able to be a girl with magical powers, but I can believe in myself and aspire to accomplish my dreams and goals as any real Magical Girl would! (n_n) But if I had to choose one, it would probably be Shugo Chara! I love Amu’s character and her pink hair is just an added bonus! xD I happen to have a thing for pink-haired characters. (n_n)
One manga/anime that hasn’t been mentioned would have to be the classic Creamy Mami series from back in the 80’s. XD Believe me, I’m not that old but it still holds a special place in my heart. (n_n)

PS: I’ve also tweeted about your contest! ;D
The first magical girl series I saw was Magical Princess Minky Momo back in the eighties, but the first manga I read was Pichi Pichi Pitch Mermaid Melody. Del Rey put it out back when it first started. Mermaids who turn into idols and sing to defeat their enemies. It was a lot of fun!
My favorite magical girl manga? I’m going to have to go with Cardcaptor Sakura! <3
