Bookshelf Overload: May 2014

Not counting the big box of review copies that arrived at the very end of the month, May actually has the distinction of my comics acquisitions outnumbering my manga acquisitions for the month. This is partly due to the fact that I went to TCAF and came away with a lot of goodies. This included picking up the first volume of Hotblood!: A Centaur in the Old West by Toril Orlesky, which is one of my new favorite things, as well as est em’s doujinshi Carmen among many others. As for the preorders that I was particularly excited to receive in May: the third-to-last volume of Blade of the Immortal and the second volume of What Did You Eat Yesterday? were released (reviews to come very soon), as was the second volume of Gangsta, which is a series I’m really looking forward to reading more of. It wasn’t exactly a preorder, but Massive also recently released Caveman Guu by Jiraiya. It’s only sixteen pages, but it’s pretty great. (Caveman Guu will actually be included in Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It from Fantagraphics later this year, too.)

  1. …So, I expect not to see you on Twitter, since instead you’ll be reading a lot right…

    …RIGHT???

    • Ash Brown says

      R-right!

…except not really. I mean, I will be reading a lot, but lurking on Twitter is a fairly constant thing for me, too…

  2. Is it weird that I look forward to this post every month? *__*

Since we were discussing earlier: Is most of the manga from Rightstuf? I noticed some of the stuff you got this month isn’t due out yet, and I was wondering if Rightstuf ever shipped stuff early…

I’ve been thinking of picking up No. 6 based on your reviews. I watched the anime and I really liked it, especially the main relationship. I’ve also been thinking about picking up Sankarea too…

My list is considerably shorter than yours this month. I’m jealous! :)

    • Ash Brown says

Hahaha! I’m glad that someone looks forward to it! And knowing that, I’ll keep posting the overloads. :D

Generally, most of my new manga comes from RightStuf, but this month was a pretty good mix of RightStuf, Amazon, and eBay/Half.com (for some of the mostly out-of-print or harder to find manga), as well as a few other places. As for the comics, because of TCAF most of those were actually purchased in-person from the publishers or creators this month.

RightStuf does occasionally ship items a little earlier than the official release date, but if I recall correctly all of the early arrivals that I received in May were advance review copies from Kodansha and Macmillan.

I’ve really been enjoying No. 6, but then I’m fond of dystopias in general. Each volume of the manga seems to be better than the last. I’d love to see the original novels translated, too. Sankarea is kind of a strange series. It has some great parts to it and it can be tremendous fun, but the series sometimes relies too heavily on tropes for my taste.
